Monster Land was by far the weirdest land they had visited yet. All around there were strange looking plants and trees. And the animals were strange, too. Dogs (at least they thought they were dogs) that had two heads and five legs. Cats with only one head, but also one leg, hopped by every so often. And there were other animals that neither Johnny nor Joey knew what they were supposed to be. Some of them didn't look as if they had a head at all. Some walked backwards, and some sideways. Agart took Johnny and Joey through the village. There they saw monster shops of all kinds. Shops where a monster could go to have its hair done (and in this place, that could be a very big job). There were shops where a monster could have its claws sharpened. And even one that removed unwanted scales. "Come in here, I'll show you my favorite store," Agart said. Johnny and Joey followed him into a store that had a big sign on the front that read: SLUGS & BUGS- ALL YOU CAN EAT TREATS
The inside of the store had a horrible smell. Johnny quickly covered his nose. But Agart inhaled deeply as if it were a bakery with freshly baked bread. Joey looked at Johnny and pulled his hand away from his face. "Don't be rude," he whispered. "Hello, Agart," a large monster from behind the counter called out. "Hello, Mr. Barkley," Agart said. "Who have you got there?" "These are my new friends, Johnny and Joey." The boys waved shyly at the shopkeeper. Mr. Barkley wasn't at all attractive. That may have been a mean thing for the boys to think of someone, but there was no other way to describe the monster behind the counter. Not that most of the monsters they have seen so far were cute, but Mr. Barkley took the prize. He wasn't very tall, not nearly as tall as Agart. His head only just reached above the counter. He was fat, and very slimy. Wherever he walked there was a trail of slime left behind. Johnny looked down at the floor and could see drying trails of Mr. Barkley's path. The shopkeeper had two large eyes that sat almost on top of his head, and a fat nose that looked as if he had pushed it against a pane of glass and it got stuck that way. "I don't believe I've seen monsters like you before," Mr. Barkley said as he walked around the counter, sliming all the way. When he came around, Joey noticed that his feet looked like flippers. "Uh, we're not monsters, sir," Joey said. "Yeah, we're just kids," Johnny added. "And how did you find yourselves in Monster Land?" "Oh, you should see," Agart said, "they came in a wonderful thing called an elevator. It's beautiful." "Well, I hope you enjoy your stay," Mr. Barkley said, then extended his slimy hand to Joey. Joey didn't want to be rude, so he reached out and shook it, trying not to make a face. Then Mr. Barkley turned and headed back around the counter. Joey looked down at his hand, which now looked as if someone had sneezed in it. He wiped it off on his pants. |
